My name is Courtney Wendel, and this is my changed life story. Throughout my life I have lived a pretty easy Christian life. I grew up in a good church, with a good family, and good friends. Throughout it all, I remained strong in my faith. However, last year during my sophomore year of college, my faith was tested in a way that required me to trust God more than I ever had before, even though I was scared.
Last year, I was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and depression. I was just so scared and sad all the time. I was worried that everything I did would make God mad and that he wouldn’t forgive me. I heard these voices in my head just telling me to give up, but I didn’t. I stayed strong even though I felt weak and I prayed to God for help. Finally, after nearly two months of keeping my problems to myself, I made the courageous leap to talk to my parents about it. They helped me to set up an appointment with a psychiatrist at school where I was diagnosed and was started on treatment, but I still felt alone in my struggles. I was already going to Cru at the time and going to Founders life group. But, one night, when I was planning on going to Founders like normal, I heard this voice in my head that I immediately knew was God, saying: “Go to Offenhauer.” And I did. I went to their group and was immediately comforted. I told them what was going on in my life, and they sympathized. There were people in the group who had gone through what I had and it was nice because throughout the next couple of months, they were able to help me when my family couldn’t. They listened to me and prayed for me, and I always felt better and closer to God after coming to life group. Fighting off my depression and anxiety was the hardest thing that I have ever had to do. But thanks to God and His people in Cru, I was able to defeat it. I definitely think that if it hadn’t been for my mental illness, I would not be a leader in Cru today. And, I love being a leader of Cru, and for that, I thank God. I’m Courtney Wendel, and this is my changed life.
Just like you heard a story of a life changed by Jesus, This could be your story too and it begins by inviting Jesus Christ into your life by faith. The greatest story happened two thousand years ago when God sent his son Jesus Christ to live a perfect life, and to die as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). This righteousness of God is given “through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe” (Romans 3:22) so that we can have a personal relationship with God both now and after we die in heaven.
Your story could change in a moment. The Bible says “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This could be your story. You can receive Jesus Christ right now by faith. Romans 10:9 says “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” You can invite Jesus into your life right now by praying this prayer.
